Team Phison by Chace Verity is a geeky May December mm romance novella. Fifty-something Phil Hutton is devastated when Curtis, his partner of several years, leaves him for a younger man. To cope with this Phil begins playing Defend Earth at all Cost, a Halo-esque first-person shooter PC game. While playing campaign mode, Phil is paired with BisonFalls; he’s a complete noob and Phil has to show him how to do everything.

Over the course of several games, they bond and fall for each other. The problem: BisonFalls, real name Tyson Falls, is half Phil’s age and lives in Georgia, while Phil lives in Connecticut.

Despite this, Tyson is insistent upon them meeting, and once they do, they click.

What I liked most about this novella is that Phil and Tyson were comfortable being geeky and silly with each other, and how they were vulnerable with each other. In many mm romances it’s all about the sex, and while there were some sex scenes, what struck me most about the story was the emotional relationship that developed between them.

If I had one criticism, it’s that I wanted more. Luckily, there’s a sequel, which I devoured too. I give  Team Phison  five out of five stars and can’t recommend it enough.
